There Will Be Brighter Tomorrows

"Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God! Now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you...I hear the tumult of the raging seas as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life." ~Psalm 42:5-8 (NLT)
******************************
This speaks deeply to my emotional state at the moment. There are times when people do or fail to do things that result in us becoming discouraged and a bit down. It's the way life goes and there's not really much we can do to prevent it from happening. What we can control is our reaction to its occurrence. When circumstances get you down, do you wallow in the hurt? Do you allow the negative feelings that arise to affect your feelings and dealings with the other party? Or do you put a song in your heart, focus on the good in your life, learn from the situation and keep stepping?

I've learned that, no matter how difficult it is, it's better to keep stepping. If ever I decide to dwell on the negative, it always ends up that I'm the one adversely impacted by my refusal to move on. The people at the root of the situation are often oblivious to my feelings and are thereby unaffected by them. So why hold myself back? I choose to move on to brighter days and better opportunities.

If life knocked you down today, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and look ahead to a brighter tomorrow. You'll be doing yourself a favor.

A Mother's Love for Her Daughter

"A little girl, asked where her home was, replied, "where mother is."
~Keith L. Brooks
*************************************
The relationship between a mother and her daughter is constantly evolving. The early years are full of hope & wonder, as Mama is the portrait of perfection and infinite possibilities are contained within the innocent gaze of sweet Baby Girl.

As the sands of time spill away, these two female forces, once so closely intertwined, begin to pull in opposing directions. Baby Girl becomes a woman in spite of Mama's desperate attempts to cling to her baby.

The latter years bring with them appreciation, understanding and a beautiful friendship, when motherhood offers Baby Girl a brand new perspective.

I am creating a promotional Photo Book that showcases the beautiful relationships that mothers and daughters share and am looking for a few willing models to participate. The Mothers & Daughters shoot will take place on Saturday, December 4, 2010, from 10am-12pm. Participants will hang out with me at my home, enjoy some light refreshments, sit for a few photos with their moms/daughters to be featured in the photo book and walk away with a special gift from Papillon.

If you or anyone you know would like to participate, contact me by November 15th and let me know. There are limited spaces available, so the sooner the better! I look forward to hearing from you!

Natural Beauty

Have you ever met someone who was just a naturally beautiful person? They just had that "thing," that inner beauty that couldn't help but ooze outward? Someone with a sweet face, and a sweet personality to match? Well, I had the pleasure of hanging out with just such a person a couple of weeks ago during my session with Tiffany.

She was sooo easy to shoot. No joke, from the very first frame I shot, she was working some kind of magic. I had a terrible time narrowing down the number of photos that I would show her - they were all so beautiful. It wouldn't surprise me if I opened a magazine in the near future and saw her face there.

Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, let me stop yapping and let the photos speak for themselves. Allow me to present to you, Ms. Tiffany.

5000 Miles at the Sound of My Voice

I had a dream last night. No, I'm not going to tell you about more random craziness like I did last time. But last night...I dreamed. I can't remember most of it, which doesn't surprise me, but the one thing that keeps replaying itself over and over is this: "5000 miles at the sound of my voice."

"The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences" (Proverbs 18:21).

How many times have you been disappointed in yourself and literally voiced your negative opinion to no one in particular? I can recall times (uh, how about last week?) that I have done something a bit less than perfect and before I could blink something like "you're so stupid" came flying out of my mouth. Can you relate? What I failed to realize in that moment is that my negative words to myself will only breed more negativity, whether that be in deeds, emotions or resulting circumstances.

If my words are so powerful that they can bring about life or death, good or bad - and I will "reap the consequences," why not make it my business to speak good things? The way I see it, whether I'm having a good day or not, I have unlimited potential. But if I'm so caught up in my imperfections that I can't see past them, how will I ever tap into that potential to reach and surpass my ideal?

Today, my realization is this:

I can go farther than I imagined if I dare to dream it, and dare to speak it.
"5000 miles at the sound of my voice."
I can be better than I ever thought I could if I dare to dream it, and dare to speak it.
"5000 miles at the sound of my voice."
I can achieve more than I thought possible if I dare to dream it, and dare to speak it.
"5000 miles at the sound of my voice."
I can. I will. I am.

Five thousand miles is that thing in your head, in your heart that seems so impossible for you to achieve that you just shove it to the back of your mind. It's a heart desire that you dare not linger on too long because the thought of it becoming a reality is simply too wonderful. Your five-thousand miles may look different than mine, but I know your heart has one. I dare you to give voice to your dreams and see what happens. I DARE YOU. I double-dog dare you (ooooooooh!). Let's see where our dreams and our voices take us.

Love: In Shades of Honey & Chocolate

What does love feel like? Perhaps it feels like a soft autumn breeze caressing your cheek while the sun shines kisses down on you.

What does love smell like? Perhaps it smells like the aroma of Jasmine & Lavender welcoming you into life's garden.

What does love sound like? Perhaps it sounds like the sweetest harmonies this side of heaven.

What does love look like? Perhaps it looks like shades of honey wrapped in chocolate. That was what it looked like to me when I had the pleasure of photographing Jamieko & Raynard.

This beautiful young couple embody love and joy. It is becoming more and more rare to see a couple who grow deeper in love as the years progress, but that is the reality for these two. A seasoned marriage and children has not cooled their fire for each other. It was truly a beautiful sight.

Jamieko & Raynard, thank you for allowing me to peek into your relationship and witness a love that is truly a treasure.

Now see their love, through my eyes...

Friday Fun Pic

Happy Friday, everyone. I hope that you've had a week filled with beauty and as many hugs as your arms could stand (honestly, hugs are one of the best inventions EVER). This week has simultaneously crawled and sped by for me. Don't know how that happens, but it seems like when I'm in the middle of the week, I can't see the end of it. But by the time Friday comes around, I'm wondering where the time went. I've been editing photos from my last two sessions like a mad woman, plus I've embarked on yet ANOTHER 365 project. I call it Three Times A Charm, cuz darnit, I shall finish this time around. Gracious. So, if you have any ideas for a self portrait (or a series), let me know! I'd love a challenge!

Let me leave you with a shot of me and my Nikko. He saw me taking my daily self-portrait and wanted to play. As soon as he sees the camera he runs to me saying "KoKo's turn! KoKo's turn! Cheeeeeeeese!" I promise you, I've never asked that kid to say cheese in front of the camera. Is that just an instinct kids are born with these days? LOL. Until next time...

What's In a Name? }:{ Jaden Knight

Jaden - "God has heard"
Knight - "Warrior" or "Champion"

Five years ago on September 19th, my little warrior took his first breath. He entered this world forcefully and was met with the screams of a mother in unbelievable pain.

100_1323

100_1328

Maybe he took his cues from the first sounds he heard out of me. Maybe he knew the meaning of his name. Maybe it's in his DNA. But whatever the case, Jaden Knight was born a fighter. He fought to enter this world (and did some damage in the process)...he made it his routine to scream nightly for at least an hour for the first few months of his little life...and he's perfected the art of pushing my buttons. If nothing else gets me to pray, Ja will. I pray for patience, for wisdom and for peace, both for me and for him.

There were many times when things were so stressful, due to Jaden's behavior, that I found it difficult to remember the good times. But when I take time to really look at my boy through eyes of love, instead of eyes of stress or fatigue or frustration, I am able to see him for who he really is. He is a strong-willed, loving, funny, intelligent boy with a heart of gold. He knows how to make me laugh like nobody's business, and I love him to pieces for it. His quick wit and the way his mind works, at only five years old, amazes me daily. I can't wait to see the man he grows up to be.

Day 58/365: look at that mama

So, to my warrior, my little champion, I know there are great things in store for you. I know that you will fight your way to your destiny. I know that when you begin to call out to God for his guidance and direction, He will hear you every time. In the meantime, I'll do it for you. Mama loves you, JKnight.

Live in Love

*I'm reposting this entry from the old blog (9/3/09) because it still has significant meaning to me and the direction I want Papillon to take.*

"Live in Love"
It's such a simple phrase, but to me, it means so much. The more time passes, the more we take the word "love" for granted. When is the last time you really thought about the meaning of that packed little word? When I think about it, this is what my heart sings...

God is love and...
Love is life.

Love is a knee weakening harmony over a beat so sick it forbids your body to be still.
Love is looking into the eyes of your baby and being amazed by the possibilities.
Love is a tangle of warm limbs, intertwined after an eternity of mmmmm.
Love is a warm hug that washes the worries of the world away.
Love is time spent in solitude finding your true self.
Love is giving of that self to someone else.
Love is laughing 'til your middle is sore.
Love is a dream and a destiny.
Love is wonder.
Love is beauty.
Love is home.

God is love and...
Love is life.

To live in love is to live like today is your last. It is to give your all, no matter what folks around you do...no matter how badly you want to give in or to give "just enough." To live in love is to live your absolute best life. It is to keep reaching, to keep striving, no matter how many times life knocks you down. It is to learn from your failures and grow a little more each and every day.

So here's to finding the love of your life, whether that be found in someone else, in yourself, or in your calling.

What's In a Name? }:{ Nessaja Camille

It was a Friday. I was exhausted and just a bit loopy. But it was a day that forever changed my life. On April 18, 2003, I met the most exquisite, delicate, breathtaking creature to ever have crossed my path. It was the day my Baby Doll entered my life.

My obsession with butterflies demanded that my little girl's name reflect just that. Nessaea is a genus of butterfly that lives in the Neotropical Ecozone, which includes Central & South America, Southern Mexico, the Caribbean Islands and Florida. It didn't hurt that Nessaeas are beautiful, some with jet black wings adorned with bold splashes of turquoise. A fitting name for such a treasure.

There is some debate as to the meaning of the name "Camille." Some say it means perfect or unblemished character. Now, you know I'm not saying that Saja is perfect, but she has one of the sweetest hearts I've come across in a long time. I admire her character. She sincerely cares about the feelings and well-being of others, sometimes too much. I often struggle with teaching her balance and how to keep her soft heart without losing herself in the process. Others say it means altar server/attendant of religious ceremonies. I truly believe that, even now, Saja has a heart for God. She's often my nudge to make my way to church on days when other things have creeped their way to the top of the "to do" list. No matter the meaning, "Camille" works for my girl.

So, here's to my beautiful, delicate, breathtaking princess. Mama loves you and the young lady you're transforming into.

Fitness, Fro's & Photos: Dreams of Random Craziness

Have you ever awoken from a dream confused about what in the world is going on in your head? Well, that was me yesterday. I guess I'm so preoccupied with certain pieces of my life that they seep into my subconscious in the most random ways imaginable. Case in point: last night's dream. Follow me down the rabbit hole, if you will...

I had a photo shoot scheduled with Beyonce & Kelly Rowland (please don't ask, I told you it was crazy) where we would all take turns taking photos of each other. [Obvious photography connection] Instead of driving, I decided to run to the studio. [Connection: my lack of a car + my recent efforts to get back in shape] I ran faster and farther than I thought possible. Once I arrived at the location, I realized I didn't have the dress I was supposed to wear for my turn in front of the camera, so I called my Mom to see if she could bring it to me. [Connection: my Mom loves me enough to pause her life to come and save mine.] When I'm changing, I notice that I have THE most AWESOME lady-six-pack known to man - like the kind I had in high school, people! [Connection: fitness kick, again]

Finally, I'm ready to photograph Beyonce, but we're losing light fast. I see the shot I want in my mind, but for some reason it's not working according to plan. Next thing you know, in walks Stephen Colbert, who moves me aside to show the crowd of 20-something people how it's done (hey, where did they come from?). [Connection: I watch waaay too much Colbert Report - that guy is hilarious!] So Stephen (may I call you Stephen, sir?) pirates my shot and takes so much time doing it that we've now lost all light. Now, here comes [b]ecker (a wonderful, and pretty popular photographer) who gives a speech to everyone & no one in particular about how rude it is to take over another photographer's shoot like Stephen did. After he concludes his speech, I quietly turn to him and let him know that he's not one that should be giving speeches because apparently, he did the same thing to me. WHAT?!?
To add to the crazy randomness,  I swear I saw Val Kilmer in the crowd, and somewhere in the middle of all the nonsense, somebody straightened 1/2 of my hair without me noticing. [Connection: my transition to hair sans chemicals]

What do I have to say about all of this, you ask? One word: Weird.

Now that you've experienced a bit of the inner workings of my subconscious...leave a comment & tell me, what was the weirdest dream you ever had?

On a serious note, though, the one thing I can take from all of the craziness is this: No matter how "out there" people may think your dreams are, never stop dreaming.

What's In a Name? }:{ Papillon }:{

Coke. Cadillac. Apple. Starbucks. What happens when you hear these names? Does a certain image come to mind? Are specific memories triggered? Do you think about the product itself or its consumers? My guess is that you most likely did not simply read the words and move on, but that your mind immediately made a connection, whether you realized it or not.

Names are powerful things. Sometimes they come with concrete meaning of their own, but many times we are able to assign meaning and substance to them. "Papillon" is French for "butterfly." But when you hear the name Papillon, I want you to think of more than a simple winged insect floating about. I want you to feel the excitement of a child as they spot one of those beautiful creatures on a warm summer day. I want you to remember the anticipation and sensations of new love. I want you to dream of taking flight and immersing yourself in the colors and sweet fragrances of life's garden.

Life is a beautiful thing and love gives life its meaning. If I can offer a glimpse of that for you to treasure, from my perspective, then I'll be satisfied.
